2006 / 2007 Growing Season / Vintage Review…
The growing season and vintage just completed plagued with an unseasonably long and dry summer with some of the worst drought conditions on record. These conditions, coupled with the frost damage from spring and early summer, contributed to some of the lowest yields on record, with many of the old growers reminiscing about the '66/'67 vintage. Fortunately, a 1 in 10 year system provided some relief in Mid January, and the vineyards supplying Smidge fared well. Most used careful irrigation early in the growing season to ensure healthy canopy development. This early development and subsequent maintenance of the canopy through the season helped protect the resultant small berries from sunburn and ensured good phenolic development through to harvest. Overall vintage has been approx 3 weeks earlier than usual.
