2010 Vintage Review

After a healthy level of rainfall through winter and spring 2009 the 09/10 growing season started well. Overall soil moisture was good and temperatures were mild. Late spring saw some erratic temperatures including some very hot weather followed by some cooler spells through the critical period of flowering. This resulted in lower yields in some Grenache and Cabernet sauvignon vineyards.
Through summer and early autumn the conditions were near perfect. Even though some hot days were experienced the season was mostly mild and a great consolation was the extremely cool nights. This gave the vineyards time to recover from the warm days and aided in some good moisture and acid retention in the fruit.
Varieties ripened slowly and evenly and came into the winery when they should have, alleviating unnecessary pressure for all.
Along with the 2010 red batches that are mainly through malolatic fermentation and ‘put to bed’, the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc is being bottled in late July and it, and all the reds are looking great.
The Houdini Sauvignon Blanc will be available late August ready for Spring.
